on Resurrection (1689 LBCF)

On this Resurrection Day, I thought it would be interesting to go into our confession of faith to study on resurrection and the state of man after death.

-The Soul/Spirit is used interchangeably in scripture. Man is flesh and spirit/soul.  Death is separation, not an end to existence. (i.e. "The soul that sins shall die"); Adam died spiritually when he sinned against God, and his soul/spirit was separated from God; as well as physically kicked out of the garden.

-The destination of the souls of the righteous and the wicked experience different realms.  The righteous are in paradise awaiting the redemption of their bodies in God's presence but the wicked are in utter darkness awaiting the final judgment which will take place on a day appointed by God.

CANON and SOLA SCRIPTURA

-The Canon of scripture isn't something that was found, formulated or instituted in the early centuries of the church or by the church but instead it was what had already been devotional to the early Christians as they gathered and copied apostolic instruction from the apostles and eventually ran from area to area to escape persecution.

Early Christians already knew what they had in their possession from the beginning of the collecting of what we now know to be the Christian manuscripts.  They knew what was authoritative and what came from the apostles either by their own pen or the pen of those who were instructed by the apostles.

-The Canon of scripture was not created or instituted as authoritative by a church creed or council.  Instead, even early church fathers wrote concerning its self-authenticating authority of these books and differentiate them from others with regard to importance and sacredness.

-The authoritativeness of scripture is not only seen in scripture directly (2 Peter 3:16; 1 Timothy 5:18, etc.) but easily perceived by the authoritative writing accounts of the Apostles and those they instructed to write concerning their witness of Christ's commandments and the gospel.

-Long before Emperor Constantine (300's AD), there were a core of (approximately 22 out of 27 books of our NT Canon) which were mentioned among the early patristic church fathers (starting from 101AD) demonstrating their sacred relevance. Among these were the gospels and Paul's epistles.

-Why NOT the apocryphal writings in the NT and OT?

Simply because Protestants wanted to use the Bible (scriptures) that was around during the days of Christ and what He would have used in the OT.

The NT quotes an extraordinary amount of the OT and the NT never quotes from apocryphal texts.

**It was only as a counter-reformation reaction that the Roman Catholic Church decided on their own official Church Canon of scripture.

So, the idea that books at any time were "taken out" of the Canon is a gross misunderstanding of history.

The OT Canon which Jesus followed included The Law, The Prophets and the Psalms, and so these were what needed to be included within a complete Canon of scripture for Protestant Christians.

*** Note that these decisions are ones that are made with a full scope on honoring and making SCRIPTURE exclusively authoritative above and beyond outward tradition, ecclesiastic councils, etc.

Not that apostolic traditional churches have less care or concern over scripture but that nothing FALLIBLE should get in the way of scriptural INFALLIBLE teaching and authority.

DO WE NEED AN AUTHORITATIVE CHURCH TO DECIDE WHAT BOOKS ARE IN THE CANON?

-NO.   When Jesus told the Jewish leaders, "Have you not read what God said to YOU.." (Concerning David, Moses, the resurrection, the prophets, etc.)

There was an already established OT Canon which was authoritative without an official COUNCIL to establish it other than God Himself.

Therefore, the same thing goes for our NT Canon:

Hebrews 1:1-2 -

"God, having spoken long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways,

in these last days spoke to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds,.."

Which Old Testament books are not quoted in the New Testament?

The books of Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Zephaniah, Nahum, Ezra, Nehemiah, Obadiah, and Esther are not quoted in the NT.

HOWEVER, ALL OT books in the Hebrew Canon were laid up by the Jews in their temple, and so early Protestants wanted to use the official canon which were accepted by the Jews.

*There's an argument  that claims that the OT depended upon oral tradition therefore, the NT church also depends upon oral tradition of the NT.   But this is not an adequate argument b/c The NT quotes the OT 283 times!

Included therein are the four books of Moses (Torah).  So if the OT is inadequate because it depended upon any oral traditions, then the NT can't be reliable either because the reliability of the NT is dependent upon the reliability of the OT.

The Rich Young Ruler

So what was the deal with the Rich Young Ruler who met up with The Lord along the way saying he's kept the law since his youth?

Also, did Jesus state he wasn't "good" as the Father is good?

And are we as Christians supposed to demonstrate our loyalty to God by living in absolute frugality?

These are questions we ask when we come to this portion of scripture and many have tried to use against Christians today.

Sabbath (Let's talk)

27 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.

28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

 Let's open up our Bibles

and let's revisit the richness of God's Word pertaining to the sabbath.

There are those who think sabbath and immediately think "Saturday"... and yet there's so, so much more to the sabbath than simply a day of the week.

"He again fixes a certain day, “Today,” saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before,

“TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE,

DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS.”

-- Hebrews 4:7

"For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His."

-- Hebrews 4:10

Eze 20:12

Eze 20:20

Mark 2:28

Parable of the unforgiving servant (Matthew 18)

Some say that this parable in Matthew 18 teaches that one can lose their salvation.

One can clearly see why.  There are a few of what I call, "tripping hazards" in the translations that would make us think so.

Some of these are the fact that at the beginning of the parable, The Lord begins by saying that "the Kingdom of Heaven can be compared to this"..

Then it mentions "fellow servants" and it mentions, that "the master" forgave the wicked servant.  Also, it says that we are to forgive "our brothers".

First of all, when it is stated "the Kingdom of Heaven is like this"... we have to stop and consider that it can't mean (taking into consideration the rest of scripture) that The Kingdom of Heaven will be LIKE people working and having servants, etc.  Heaven isn't going to be a glorious factory where people will be committed to work and have cruel bosses, and obvious work related stress, etc.

So it has to mean something else.

The emphasis is on two things: FORGIVENESS and the wickedness of NOT FORGIVING.

Notice that the master forgave MUCH so the servant was expected to forgive much, and it uses a familiar example of work and slavery, which in those times, was a reality in that ancient culture.

People used to literally place themselves in slavery in order to survive.   Also, people were forced into slavery if they couldn't pay their debts.

Therefore, just as in the world, people were expected to pay their debts (extraneously) why would it be any different or lesser paying a debt to God, The Creator?

The Lord had also stated in Luke 7 that a person who is forgiven little loves little but a person who is forgiven much, loves much.

This is the heart and subsequent action of a truly regenerated (born again) child of God, and one who has been forgiven much.

And this is why the servant was considered "wicked" because when he was forgiven much yet he loved little since he didn't have mercy upon the person who couldn't pay their debt.   By his actions, it demonstrates that the parable isn't about the saved and the unsaved but exclusively about the ugliness of unforgiveness.

Notice how The Lord uses the words "brother", only AFTER He completes the parable.  In the parable, they weren't brothers but "fellow slaves or servants".

The Lord was speaking to Peter using an example of what wicked unforgiveness looks like, in opposition to the attribute of forgiveness which is characteristic of "The Kingdom of Heaven".

Eschatology Trippin'!

What is Eschatology Trippin'?  I'll give you a clue: Eschatology Trippin' will get us 'time setting' and will discourage our work in The Lord in these last days.  We don't want to be Eschatology Trippin'!  We do however, want to push forward with joy in our hearts and remain faithful in our holy endeavors.

The ESSENTIALS of the Christian faith

Nothing is more important than the essentials.

The essentials separate the true message from the false.

By this we know who we are.  By this we know who God is, what is expected of us, and how it is that we're saved.  Our hope is here - in the essentials.

The Word of God is clear that there IS a mystery that has been revealed.

The Word of God states that the message is passed down once for all to the saints.

The Word of God states that Holy scripture has been preserved holy and pure, and is perfect.

The Word of God is said to be God-breathed.

We have that Word among us and by it we know who is of the faith so that if we abide and endure, it is because He has empowered us to finish the race set before us.

How NOT to study the Bible

I may post a more in-depth instruction on "how to" study the Bible but for now, I want to mention that the one way NOT to  study the scriptures, is to simply lean ALONE on a direct and un-aided understanding of what we're reading.

Today, we have more resources and information laid at our finger tips than ever before in recorded history.   Not to use commentaries, other Bible translations, Church history documents, and extra-Biblical source material in our study is to limit our scholarship.

But unfortunately today, that's what we have more than ever -- people who simply decide to be un-aided in their Bible studies, and literally regard all of those other resources as though they're "the enemy".

This is an extremely backwards understanding and approach to Bible scholarship.

This attitude in learning is what produces the cults, false doctrines, and continuous splintering  denominations.

Not to mention, approaching Bible study without a clear understanding of hermeneutics, proper exegesis, etc.

Relevant to this, I've posted my pre-video podcast on "The Essentials of The Christian Faith" in my last Blog.

Check it out and God bless!

Coming Soon!

NEW podcasts: "SLAVERY is GOOD" and "THE ESSENTIALS of the CHRISTIAN FAITH"

Coming soon!  Be sure to find them on Anchor.fm/trunews365 and the STEREO APP podcast

============================

Those who are hostile to the faith want to use the issue of slavery in the Bible as though it is the Achilles heel against the faith.  But in order to do that, one has to completely side-step, hop-scotch, and fully ignore Biblical culture and history.  This is not a very scholarly or honest approach to study any historical and ancient text.

Also, the question always arises ... Why are there so many Christian denominations out there? Is God not in control of His Church or is He after all, the author of confusion? ...

I'll try and answer both these topics in my next podcasts.

Disney's "Encanto" compromises Latino culture for freakiness!

This new Disney cartoon features a lesbian character with super-strength.

It offers its Latino viewers a dramatic and visual  Colombian cultural platter with a touch of new world sexual revolution.. not just for the kids but for the whole family - of coarse.

In order to get the beautiful and colorful culture of Colombia you have to be inclusive of the new world secular immoral culture of sexual revolution.

The right thing to do for families who do not want to compromise on feeding this normalization of blasphemy of God's Word to their children is simply avoid watching it.
The Word of The Lord says, "The one who is not with Me is against Me; and the one who does not gather with Me scatters." -- Matthew 12:30

If you can't see how this and the secular leftist push to normalize the immorality the Bible clearly calls abomination, you're probably already too far  indoctrinated in the cultural cool-aid of the world.

Not to push back is to compromise and indifference to these satanic and serpentine subtleties is to be lukewarm in the faith.

Don't get spewed out is all I'm saying.

Stay woke my friends.
